Until the early 1960s, the Coastal mascot was the Trojans until the university became an extension of the other USC (not the Trojans which would’ve been ironic), the University of South Carolina. They tried to choose a mascot similar to that of USC’s, the Gamecocks, and came up with the Chanticleers based on “The Nun’s Priest’s Tale” from Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales” . Coastal became an independent university from the other USC in 1993 and stuck with the name.
