Mascot of the day ~ Demon Deacon, Wake Forest ~
In 1923, Wake Forest beat their rival Trinity, which would go on to be named Duke University and annoy generations of college basketball fans across the land with their fundamental-minded, close-knit style of play. 1924 WF graduate, Mayon Parker, wrote in the following issue of the school’s newspaper a reference to the team as Demon Deacons because of their devilish play and fighting spirit. Henry Belk, the school news director, and Hank Garrity, the football and basketball coach, enjoyed and thus popularized the term.
The actual mascot did not appear until 1941, played by Jack Baldwin, 1943 graduate of WF.
