The
chicken wings continued to soar through the air, tiny, savory projectiles.
Bubbles looked around Pinsiders as they remained airborne for what seemed like
an eternity. How could these delicious wings be so buoyant, as aerodynamic as
Michael Jordan in his college days? What kind of insane scientific properties were
at work here? Was it voodoo witchcraft? Bubbles saw Voodoo Witchcraft perform a
secret concert at The El Rey last Arbor Day and it was fantastic. Are these ascending
chicken wings the result of the sweet, lo-fi melodies of this California punk
band?
As the chicken wings began their
descent back to earth, Bubbles thought about his path to becoming Bubbles. He
was born Malcolm Pittman on April 7, 1980 in Saratoga Springs, New York to
Steve and Cindy. Winters were spent hitting the countless ski slopes encompassing
the town with his two older brothers, Ryan and Ross, and younger sister,
Rachel. These were some of the warmest and coldest days of Malcolm’s adolescence,
warm with love and cold with snow. He often reflects on these wayward times as
being the root for his love of clowning. One memory stands out amongst the
rest. He was inner tubing with his brothers and sister when it happened. An
elderly man with his grandchildren was about to push them down the slope in
their tube and send them off on a wild ride. Before the man could give them a shove, Ryan and Ross body checked him onto the vehicle and sent them
down the slope. Hilariously, all three, the old man and his two grandchildren, tumbled
down the mountain on their inner tube. In retrospect, it was probably not the
nicest thing for Ryan and Ross to do to this old man but everyone found it thoroughly
sidesplitting in the moment. It was in that instance that Malcolm’s love of
clowning, on others and in practice, was incepted and the seed of Bubbles was
planted.
