Mascot of the day ~ Jonathan the Husky, UConn
The mascot was named after Jonathan Trumbull, the colonial and first state governor of Connecticut. Traditionally there are two Jonathans, one a student in a costume and the other a live husky dog.
All but the first real husky mascot, a brown and white dog, had been a solid white one with one brown eye and one blue eye until 2013 when UConn changed their mascot to a black and white husky. In 1934, Rhode Island’s ram mascot was kidnapped, bringing interest to a live animal mascot for UConn, which was selected via a student poll in 1935, one of the few schools to choose a mascot this way.
